For anyone who’s ever had to download a Microsoft Word doc, convert it to PDF, use a separate e-signature tool, and finally send it off, there’s some good news. Microsoft is finally resolving that whole mess.
SharePoint eSignature is coming straight to Microsoft 365 Word
Microsoft is baking eSignature tools right into Word for Microsoft 365 customers. No more exporting. No more switching apps. You’ll be able to insert signature fields, send signature requests, and manage templates all without leaving the Word interface.
The feature is powered by SharePoint’s eSignature service, and it’s built to work seamlessly inside Word. It’s not a plug-in, but a native feature. When you send a document for signing, 365 Word creates a PDF on the spot, sends it off, and stores the signed copy right alongside the original file in SharePoint.
The tools go beyond “click here to sign.” You’ll get audit trails, email notifications, and full visibility into who signed and when. You can also reuse templates—perfect for teams that send the same forms over and over.
IT admins can control the SharePoint eSignatures in Microsoft 365 Word as well. They can roll out the feature selectively across an organization using group policies or limit it to specific SharePoint sites. And yes, logging works with Microsoft Purview.
Right now, the feature is rolling out in phases. U.S., Canada, UK, Europe, and APAC regions are first, with a full global launch expected by the end of the year. All that said, it won’t show up unless your IT admin enables it.
