Nintendo has launched the Switch 2, its first major console in five years, with a bigger screen, faster hardware, and features built for modern multiplayer. Starting at $449.99, or $499.99 bundled with Mario Kart World, the console is now available globally, though stock is already tight across most retailers.
The new model sticks to the Switch formula: portable or docked play with detachable controllers. But nearly everything else is upgraded. The screen is now 7.9 inches at 1080p with HDR and 120Hz support. Dock it, and the Nintendo Switch 2 outputs 4K visuals and 5.1 surround sound, thanks to a custom NVIDIA chip that brings it closer to PS5 and Xbox Series X territory.
The Joy-Con controllers now attach magnetically, feel more solid, and come with improved L and R buttons—small changes that make a big difference in fast-paced games. Storage starts at 256GB, and you’ll likely want a microSD Express card to expand it.
Nintendo is also leaning into social gaming. A new GameShare feature lets friends play compatible titles even without owning them, while GameChat allows real-time video chats during play. You’ll need a camera and a Nintendo Online subscription for that, but it’s a first for Nintendo.
About 25 games are available at launch, including new entries like Survival Kids and Fast Fusion, plus enhanced versions of Fortnite and Zelda. Most older Switch games still work, and retro classics from the NES to GameCube are also on tap via Nintendo’s subscription.
If you didn’t preorder, you may have to hunt around. Walmart, GameStop, and Target are offering limited stock, but expect high demand for the foreseeable future.
